Middleburgh Library Historical and Genealogical Resources
by Steve Lamont
An excellent source for historical or genealogical research is the historical room of the Middleburgh Public Library. Frances Spencer was the first librarian in the late 1930s and an avid historian and genealogist. The history room, a monument to her, contains hundreds of family histories, and vital, census, church, cemetery, and obituary records available for genealogical research. In addition it holds thousands of cards in the Master Name and Obituary files; valuable colonial and Schoharie County material; scrapbooks, maps, filed newspapers, and the Middleburgh News on microfilm; and the Russell Begh collection of photos and negatives. The collection of 1000-plus items is bar-coded and on the
Mohawk Valley Library System catalog. There is no professional genealogist on staff, but part-time helpers guide patrons with their searches.
