This newsletter discusses the status of Forks-in-the-Road Schoolhouse—its role in the development of free public secular education in New York, profiles of the people who attended school there, it’s history from 1812 through the 20th century, and its possible future into the 21st century. We also draw upon local historians Bee Mattice and Richard Lewis to discuss the Susquehanna Turnpike and the Gershom Stevens family; ways to collect and interpret local postcards by Middleburgh’s Jake Brouwer; and the continuing letters by Orrin Curtis after his experiences on the field at Gettysburg.
